Dr Raja Al Gurg’s portrait unveiled at Queen’s University Belfast

Dr Raja Al Gurg’s portrait was recently unveiled in the Great Hall at Queen’s University Belfast. ESAG’s Chairperson and Managing Director is part of a distinguished gallery showcasing women who’ve transformed healthcare, education and society.

This portrait is also a testament to the cherished connection between Queen’s Belfast and Dr Al Gurg that helped lay the foundation of the Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences. The association nurtured between these two institutions reflects shared excellence in groundbreaking research and medical innovation.

In Dr Al Gurg’s words: “For me this portrait has great significance as it serves as a reminder of the transformative power of education and collaboration. I hope it inspires future generations to aim high, create lasting change within their spheres of influence and make a positive impact on the world.”

Caroline Young, Vice-President, Students and Corporate Services, said: “It is a privilege to honour Dr Al Gurg with a portrait in our Great Hall to recognise her many links with our University, prominence in the business world, dedication to shaping and promoting education, as well as her commitment to advocacy for women in the workplace, creating opportunities for them to thrive and develop in their careers.”

The painting has been exquisitely rendered by award-winning Northern Irish artist Catherine Creaney, known for her portraits using mediums of oil, pastel and pencil in a realist manner. She has also painted the former Lord Mayors of Belfast Kate Nicholl and Deirdre Hargey as well as the famous Irish actress Fiona Shaw.
